The largest highway tender in the history of the Turkish Republic, worth some $7 billion, was concluded, with the Nurol İnşaat-Özaltın İnşaat-Makyol İnşaat-Astaldi İnşaat-Yüksel İnşaat-Göçay İnşaat Joint Venture having emerged the winner. İhsan Akbıyık, the tender committee head, announced in Ankara that the Nurol Group -- the joint venture -- won the tender, having fulfilled the conditions of the bid specifications as they committed to the shortest period of operation and management of the bridge and highway after their completion. Two groups, both made up of giant construction companies, have been competing for the tender for the construction of a new highway stretching from the town of Gebze in the northwestern province of Kocaeli to the Aegean province of İzmir, including a bridge over the Gulf of İzmit. Nurol's rival, the Cengiz İnşaat-Kolin İnşaat-Mapa İnşaat-Limak İnşaat Joint Venture, failed to meet the tender conditions. The tender directorate first asked the companies submitting bids to specify how long they wanted to operate the bridge and highway, which will be carried out through the build-operate-transfer method. The Nurol Group offered 22 years and four months, while the other group offered 34 years and nine months. |
